Owners of the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or anyone else running SteamOS on their system can run the Devil May Cry HD Collection thanks to a small patch from Capcom. Interestingly, the official patch notes don’t make any direct reference to the Linux-based operating system, only mentioning Windows 11 compatibility and “miscellaneous bug fixes” in an update yesterday.

However, changed files listed on SteamDB reveal the addition of .webm-based movies in place of the previous .wmv (Windows Media Video) files for cutscenes. The latter format reportedly caused issues on SteamOS/Linux systems and would crash the game on Proton. With the codec now updated, GamingOnLinux reports that the game “properly” works via “plain Proton 11”.

DMC HD Collection is now working on Linux via Proton

Based on testing from Liam Squires-Hand over at GamingOnLinux, the “videos do appear to be working without issue”. Over on the Steam page for the game, we can see it is still listed with an ‘Unsupported’ rating for Steam Deck, Steam Machine, SteamOS, and Steam Frame, likely due to the historical problems with cutscene crashes. We can now expect this to be updated in due time.

So, if DMC is in your backlog collecting virtual dust, then you should now be able to play through the collection (which includes Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition) without any problems. Though it should be noted that we’ll have to wait for a full playthrough to ensure all three games are working as intended from start to finish.
