Don’t buy the 7800X3D, its successor is still just $30 more following the launch of two new X3D chips

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D came out in April 2023. It quickly became one of the best gaming CPUs because of its strong performance and high amount of L3 cache. Even a few months ago, it was still in high demand, as it was sold out at most retailers, with Newegg being the only one selling it but at a much higher price than its original launch price. And if you are thinking about buying it now, you might want to reconsider, as its successor is only slightly more expensive and offers much better performance.
You can get the 9800X3D for a little more than the 7800X3D
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D was released in November 2024, and these days, it is one of the most popular choices when it comes to gaming processors. At launch, it had a price tag of $479. While there have been occasional price increases as a result of limited stock, it has mostly stayed close to this price.
If you check Amazon or Newegg, two of the biggest online retailers, you’ll find the 7800X3D selling for around $439 on Amazon and $449 on Newegg. If you look at its price history on Camelcamelcamel, you'll see that before September 2023, the 7800X3D was often priced below $400. When AMD launched the 9800X3D, many expected the 7800X3D to drop back below $400, but that didn't happen.

Even now, after AMD has released two new high-end X3D CPUs, the 9950X3D and 9900X3D, the 7800X3D still hasn't seen a big price drop. Right now, Ryzen 9 9950X3D & 9900X3D stock still needs some time to recover following the launch on March 12th. All of the CPUs mentioned here are for AMD’s latest AM5 platform, so they are compatible with the same motherboards.
At its current price, buying the 7800X3D doesn't make much sense. The reason is simple – you can get the 9800X3D for just $40 more on Amazon and $30 more on Newegg. The 9800X3D is listed at its original launch price of $479 on both retailers, which is a small difference considering the performance improvements you get.
As we’ve discussed in our in-depth review, the 9800X3D is the best gaming CPU on the market right now. Its second-generation 3D V-Cache technology allows it to run the CPU cores faster and at higher voltages compared to the 7800X3D. This makes it not only better for gaming but also for productivity tasks, which is rare for an X3D processor. On top of that, the 9800X3D supports overclocking, something that wasn't possible with older X3D CPUs, making it an overall better choice.
