Epic Games has announced a major pricing update for Fortnite that will change how players buy and earn V-Bucks. According to the company, the cost of running Fortnite has increased significantly over time, and the new pricing adjustments are meant to help cover those rising expenses. As Epic puts it, “we’re raising prices to help pay the bills”. The changes will officially take effect starting March 19.

For those unfamiliar, V-Bucks are Fortnite’s in-game currency. Players use them to purchase cosmetic items such as skins, emotes, and pickaxes, as well as unlock seasonal content like the Battle Pass. V-Bucks are usually purchased in preset bundles using real money, though players can also earn them through gameplay by completing certain passes and challenges.

One of the biggest changes affects the V-Bucks bundles themselves. While the prices of the bundles will remain the same, the number of V-Bucks included in each pack will be reduced. For example, the $8.99 pack will now include 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000, and the $22.99 pack will drop from 2,800 to 2,400 V-Bucks. Larger bundles are also being adjusted. The $36.99 pack will now contain 4,500 V-Bucks instead of 5,000, and the $89.99 pack will include 12,500 instead of 13,500.

Epic is also adjusting the exact amount purchase option, where players can buy small amounts of currency. The cost will increase from around $0.50 for 50 V-Bucks to $0.99 for the same amount, effectively doubling the price for that option. Of course, for the best value, opting for one of the preset packs is your best bet.

To offset some of the impact, Epic is highlighting its Epic Rewards system, which gives players 20% credit back when purchases are made through the Epic Games Store or Epic’s own payment system across PC, mobile, and web. The reward credit can later be used for purchases in Fortnite, other Epic games, or on the Epic Games Store.

Fortnite passes also get a price change

There are also price changes for Fortnite passes. The Battle Pass will now cost 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000, but players will also earn 800 V-Bucks by completing it, meaning they can still use those rewards to unlock the next season’s pass. However, V-Bucks will no longer appear in the Bonus Rewards section. The OG Pass will also now cost 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000, while both the Music Pass and LEGO Pass will drop from 1,400 to 1,200 V-Bucks.

Finally, Fortnite Crew subscribers will see a change as well. The monthly subscription previously granted 1,000 V-Bucks, but that reward will now be reduced to 800 V-Bucks. Epic says Crew members will receive emails with more details about when the update takes effect in their region.
