Fortnite is already the #1 action game on iOS after finally returning to the App Store

In August 2020, the popular battle royale title Fortnite was removed from Apple's App Store after Epic Games introduced its own in-app payment system, bypassing Apple's 30 percent commission on purchases. The move violated Apple's policies and sparked a high-profile legal battle, with Epic accusing the tech giant of operating the App Store as a monopoly. Now, nearly five years later, Fortnite has officially returned to the iOS App Store in the US.
In a post on X, Fortnite confirmed the news and shared a link to download the game. The company also noted that Fortnite is available through the Epic Games Store and AltStore. “It will show up on Search soon!” the post added. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney also took to X to celebrate the moment, saying, “We back fam.” Interestingly, this comeback follows recent headlines that Apple had blocked Fortnite's return to the App Store and Epic Games Store for iOS in the EU.

Just hours after its return to the App Store, Fortnite has already shot to the top as the number one action game on iOS in the US, which shows just how much gamers were waiting for this moment. This victory for Epic Games comes shortly after a judge stated that Apple is “fully capable of resolving this issue without further briefing or a hearing”, and ordered the tech giant to either resolve the matter or have “the Apple official who is personally responsible” appear in court next week.
We hope this return isn’t just a temporary turn in the ongoing saga and that Fortnite is here to stay on the App Store for good. However, Apple is also said to be appealing the decision that forced it to allow links to external payment stores, so it’s possible Epic could be forced to remove the link to its store, which would almost certainly start the war all over again.
Epic recently rolled out a few changes to its game distribution platform, along with a new promotion to encourage use of its payment systems. If you make purchases through Epic's system in Fortnite, Rocket League, or Fall Guys on PC, iOS, Android, or the web, you’ll receive 20 percent back in Epic Rewards that can be used for other purchases in its games or on the Epic Games Store.
