It has been a big week for CD Projekt RED, the developers behind acclaimed Cyberpunk 2077 (and The Witcher series, of course). CP 2077 was released on Mac yesterday along with a massive patch for the game. You can read the full update 2.3 patch notes if you want to learn more; the patch introduced new vehicles, AutoDrive, photo mode changes, bug fixes, and much more.

Notably, patch 2.3 also introduced support for AMD FSR 3.1 Frame Generation, Intel XeSS 2.0, and FSR 4. However, the implementation of AMD’s latest upscaling tech hasn’t gone so smoothly, and there has been some confusion over drivers. FSR 4 is pending an AMD driver, and is crashing the game for many users, while others managed to get it working.

Missing FSR 3.1 and broken FSR 4 implementation

Widespread reports on this Reddit thread tell us that FSR 4 is actually selectable in the game for many users, despite the patch notes saying “The FSR 4 option will not be available in the in-game settings” until AMD releases a driver. However, trying to use FSR 4 will often cause the game to crash. In contrast, YouTuber Ancient Gameplays managed to get it working on their RX 9060 XT graphics card.

The YouTuber is running the game with updated drivers, which display as 25.6.3 Optional Update inside AMD’s Adrenalin software. This update has no mention of Cyberpunk 2077 and was actually released a few weeks ago, so it’s not clear why it supports FSR 4 on CP 2077. What is actually being used under the hood is the SI Driver for Radeon RX 9060 XT (25.10.09.01), which is publicly available for download, so be sure to check this out if you’re using the 9060 XT. Again, this driver doesn’t specify any support, but it’s your best option until more AMD drivers arrive “at a later date”.

Regardless, it has also been pointed out that FSR 3.1 Super Resolution is missing from the game – only the frame generation aspect is available, so gamers will have to choose between 2.1, 3.0, or 4.0, if they have an RX 9000 series card for the latter.

Comparing FSR 3.0 and FSR 4.0, Ancient Gameplays shows that there is indeed a noticeable difference, a much bigger jump in quality when comparing 2.1 to 3.0, with much less shimmering and pixelization on FSR 4 – so it seems to be working despite no official AMD driver update mentioning support just yet. It’s not known when that will arrive, but we can only imagine it will be sooner, rather than later. On top of all that, XeSS 2.0, which is compatible with AMD cards, works nicely too.
