Game studio Alderon Games urges users to avoid Intel 14th and 13th gen CPUs due to ‘nearly 100%’ failure rate

Maybe time to switch to AMD?

Intel has not been having a great time in terms of CPU instability in its 14th and 13th-generation processors. And it’s started right before AMD is set to release their 9000 series to the world. Intel CPU instability issues are well-documented by users at this point. Wccftech recently investigated Intel rejecting RMA requests for processors made unusable by instability and it seems this issue has now extended to game studios.

Game studio, Alderon Games, responsible for the multiplayer dinosaur survival game Path of Titans, has experienced massive instability issues with their Intel-based servers citing a “nearly 100%” failure rate. That’s every single Intel-based server going down, and losing the company money. We will note though that these stability issues have reportedly been affecting the high-end 13900K and 14900K SKUs for the most part.

What Alderon Games has to say on the Intel crashes

Aldern Games founder, Matthew Cassells, took to their website to address the issue and outline the main areas they are seeing the Intel CPUs fail. Here is what was posted on the official Alderon Games website:

“We have identified failures in five main areas:

  • End Customers: Thousands of crashes on Intel CPUs on 13th and 14th Gen CPUs in our crash reporting tools.
  • Official Dedicated Game Servers: Experiencing constant crashes, taking entire servers down.
  • Development Team: Developers using these CPUs face frequent instability while building and working on the game. It can also cause SSD and memory corruption.
  • Game Server Providers: Hosting community servers with persistent crashing issues.
  • Benchmarking Tools: Decompression and memory tests unrelated to Path of Titans also fail.”

It’s gotten so bad that Alderon Games have taken to migrating all servers to AMD, which Matthew says they experience 100 times fewer crashes than on the faulty Intel Chips. We’ve seen other game server hosts switching to AMD as well lately.

Alderon claims their testing shows “nearly 100%” failure rate, source: Alderon Games

“To prevent further harm to our game, we are implementing the following measures:

  • Server Migration: We are swapping all our servers to AMD, which experiences 100 times fewer crashes compared to Intel CPUs that were found to be defective.
  • Hosting Recommendations: We advise anyone hosting Path of Titans servers or selling game servers to avoid purchasing or using 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs.
  • In-Game Notifications: We are adding a popup message in-game to inform users with these processors about the issue. Many users are currently unaware of why their game is crashing and what they can do about it.”

To have a developer post notifications in-game about issues related to CPUs, you know it’s bad. it will be affecting both the game and the developer’s reputation if their game is constantly crashing and losing server owners money. It’s no surprise that Alderon Games took it upon themselves to make sure that it’s not their or their game’s fault.

What is Intel doing about it?

Currently, we have no insight as to whether Intel is going to do anything about these crashes, but now that the issues have started to affect game developers and server hosts alike, Intel needs to do something fast.

The Investigation that Wccftech ran on Intel rejecting RMA claims because of instability issues is doing nothing to help the image of the CPU giant. All of this coming right before AMD is set to release a new line of processors. This game and community might be relatively small, but you can probably imagine the negative repercussions if a larger game or company were to become so vocal about their issues with Intel. This is not fair and it needs to be fixed.
