Linux gaming has continued to grow over the past few years, thanks in large part to hardware like the Steam Deck and improvements to Proton. However, one major feature GOG users have been asking for is an official Linux version of the Galaxy launcher. Earlier this year, GOG said “Work has started” on native Linux support, and now, the project is well underway.

GOG has confirmed to GamingOnLinux that it is actively working toward bringing the Galaxy launcher to Linux. The update comes after the company previously described Linux as its “next major frontier” and announced plans to hire a specialist dedicated to the project.

GOG has hired a specialist for the “significant undertaking”

While the company has supported Linux games through its website for some time, the GOG Galaxy app itself has remained exclusive to Windows. Joint-CEO Krzysztof Papliński said Linux has been one of the most requested topics from the community, adding that the company appreciates the patience shown by users over the years.

“Linux continues to be one of the topics we hear the most about from our community, and we really appreciate the passion and patience of everyone who’s been asking about it.

Following the role we announced earlier this year, we now have the specialist on board and are actively exploring the best way to approach Linux support for GOG GALAXY. This is a significant undertaking, so while we’re not ready to share any specific plans, timelines, or results just yet, it’s very much an area we’re investing time and effort into.

Although there’s no official Linux version of GOG Galaxy today, Linux users aren’t completely locked out of their libraries. Games that support Linux can already be downloaded directly from GOG’s website, with many players relying on third-party launchers like Heroic to access their GOG libraries on Linux systems and the Steam Deck.

Still, an official Linux version of GOG Galaxy would offer several advantages. Besides providing direct access to users’ game libraries, the launcher also includes features like achievement tracking, playtime statistics, automatic game updates, cloud saves for supported titles, and the ability to manage libraries from multiple storefronts in one place.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the launcher will arrive anytime soon. GOG has made it clear that Linux support is still in development and that there’s no release window to announce. Even so, the confirmation that work is actively progressing is great news for Linux users who have been requesting an official Galaxy client for years.
