Fan-made Halo game coming to Steam next month gets official blessing from Halo Studios
Table of Contents
Spartan Survivors is a Bullet Heaven / Roguelite game, much like the popular Vampire Survivors, except using characters, weapons, and enemies from the Halo universe. Players can take control of either Master Chief or The Arbiter and take on waves of either The Covenant or The Flood.
It looks like your basic free-to-play bit of mindless, addictive fun, but the most noteworthy thing is that Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries), and by extension Microsoft, have given the game their approval.
The developers have proudly posted the message sent to them by Halo Studios on their X/Twitter account, which you can see in the image below: “Really love to see the passion you and your team have poured into this experience – it really is fun and we look forward to getting further in our playthrough and unlocking more stuff” – Aww isn’t that nice!?

It certainly makes a pleasant change from the likes of the mega-litigious Nintendo, who will destroy anyone who even glances in the direction of their Intellectual Property.
Where can you play Spartan Survivors?
As stated by the developers, Spartan Survivors can currently be played on Itch.io but will soon be available on Steam. The game’s creator says a Steam version will be available “next month,” while Xbox and mobile versions are coming “later this Summer.” So, be sure to keep a keen eye on the development of Spartan Survivors in the coming weeks!

Microsoft’s Game Content Usage Rules
As the makers of Spartan Survivors point out on their main site, the game was created under Microsoft’s Game Content Usage Rules, which do allow for third parties to make games that incorporate elements of their intellectual property, as long as they adhere to certain parameters.
The rules are fairly extensive, as you might expect. The gist of it is that you cannot produce any content for your own commercial use (i.e. it must be free), and you cannot use any Game Content within a game which may be considered ‘objectionable’ (e.g. discriminatory, involving drug use or other illegal activity, pornographic – although the definition is ultimately up to Microsoft).
Additionally, you cannot use any trademarked logos or names (Spartan is obviously not trademarked), and you cannot reverse engineer any of their games “to access the assets or otherwise do things that the games don’t normally permit in order to create your Items”.
