Whether you like it or not, frame generation is quickly becoming an important part of game optimization, particularly for the latest AAA games. Nvidia upped the ante by releasing DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation (MFG). MFG is currently locked to the latest RTX 50 series, and rivals don’t have an equivalent just yet. That’s soon going to change, as Intel has unveiled XeSS 3 with Multi Frame Generation, which will be supported across all Intel Arc GPUs.

All three major GPU manufacturers (Nvidia, AMD, and Intel) have some form of frame generation technology as part of their graphics kits. The brands’ AI-accelerated suites (DLSS, FSR, and XeSS, in the same order as above) all started with upscaling technology, while frame generation joined the party more recently. Nvidia is the only one with MFG available right this second.

XeSS-MFG gets previewed by Intel

Intel has already previewed XeSS-MFG on the new Painkiller remake due for release later this month. Intel matches Nvidia’s implementation by generating up to three additional frames on top of the rasterized frame. Like Nvidia, this will be known as ‘4x frame gen’ as it counts the native frame, too. The only problem now is support from game developers – XeSS support has been getting better, but DLSS is on another level, with many AAA titles these days launching with DLSS 4 support on day one; the same cannot be guaranteed for XeSS 3 right now. At the very least, we know Painkiller will be supported.

One of the most exciting parts of the XeSS 3 with Multi Frame Gen is that it won’t be locked to just one GPU generation – like Nvidia has done with MFG on DLSS 4. It will be supported on all Arc GPUs with XMX hardware (currently led by the flagship Arc B580); this includes the older Arc A-series, Core Ultra 200 (Xe2) integrated graphics, and any future Arc products. The older Xe1 GPUs will get support at a later date.

Following Nvidia, Intel is the second company to announce a Multi Frame Generation solution. This leaves AMD behind for now, but since FSR Redstone is still reportedly on track for this year, that could soon flip on its head. The interesting part, however, is that AMD hasn’t strictly confirmed that MFG is part of the new Redstone upgrade. Team Red has instead said that the new ML Frame Generation “predicts and inserts new frames between rendered ones” – note the plural.

In any case, Intel has yet to reveal a release date for XeSS 3 with XeSS-MFG, but since Panther Lake is looking likely to be released in 2026, we can speculate the same for XeSS 3.
