A few days ago, OpenAI announced a major update to its AI image generation technology, introducing 4o Image Generation, which the tech giant calls its “most advanced image generator built into ChatGPT-4o”. This new update takes image generation to the next level, as it not only creates breathtaking visuals with photorealistic effects but also comes with advanced text rendering, now available within ChatGPT.

Previously, while AI models were capable of generating stunning results, they struggled with handling text information. However, GPT-4o image generation excels at accurately rendering text. Whether you want to create a menu listing or add text on top of any image to convey visual information, ChatGPT-4o image generation has just opened the door to some exciting new AI image generation possibilities.

Advanced text rendering is an obvious improvement

4o’s improved text generation comes from advanced training on the relationship between images and text, allowing for more “context-aware and consistent outputs”. By understanding how visuals interact with language and with each other, 4o enhances both accuracy and fluency in generating meaningful content.

It can also seamlessly integrate words within images, which is what makes it such a powerful image generation model. One of the telltale signs of an AI image was incorrect text generation, sometimes resulting in gibberish, but the latest update makes it tougher to identify what’s real and what isn’t. However, OpenAI notes there are limitations, saying the model “sometimes struggles with rendering non-Latin languages”.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes generating a few words in the right place can elevate the meaning of an image. 4o's ability to blend precise symbols with imagery turns image generation into a tool for visual communication.

Apart from its advanced text capabilities, 4o's image generation brings significant improvements over previous versions. Since its launch on March 25, users can't seem to get enough, and if you've opened your favorite social media app, you've likely seen tons of memes and creations from others. In response to this surge in demand, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced a temporary rate limit for image generation.
