ChatGPT just got one of its biggest upgrades in some time, particularly for the AI image generation side of the technology. OpenAI introduced 4o Image Generation on March 25th, and it has been taking the internet by storm. It’s a noticeable upgrade to the previous generation of GPT image generation, with people flooding social media with their creations (if you wish to credit them with it).

Over on the r/ChatGPT subreddit, you’ll find a seemingly endless list of examples of 4o image generation in action. Everything from cartoon recreations of family photos to memes – lots and lots of memes. In any case, the sudden uptick in demand has forced OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to announce restrictions on the new version.

OpenAI CEO announces temporary rate limit for image generation

In response to the heavy demand, Sam Altman has taken to X to say that OpenAI’s “GPUs are melting” and has announced a limit of three AI image generations for the free tier of ChatGPT. He goes on to say that it “hopefully won’t be long” and the restriction will kick in soon. So, if you’re enjoying the new and improved model on the free version, it’s time to start choosing your prompts wisely.

Whether you’re a fan of AI or frankly frightened of how realistic image generation is getting, there’s no denying that these new improvements have caused a buzz online. GPT-4o image generation improves aspects such as text rendering, consistency, and photorealism.

Altman goes on to say in a follow-up post that the company has mistakenly been refusing some generations, and is going to fix this as soon as possible. One of the popular uses of the new model is recreating the iconic style of the popular Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli. We don’t expect this to be restricted in any way – just don’t use these creations for commercial purposes.
