Linux distro designed to look like Windows hits 2 million downloads since the end of Windows 10 support

Zorin OS is a Linux distribution (commonly known as distros) that can make Windows users feel more at home. A recent announcement from the developers reveals that Zorin OS 18 has enjoyed two million downloads in less than 3 months. Version 18 was officially released on October 14, 2025 – the very same date Microsoft ended support for Windows 10.
Linux has been growing in popularity lately, even becoming more popular on Steam as some gamers turn away from Windows. The ongoing development of Valve’s Linux-based SteamOS is another reason to be excited about the future of Linux gaming – it’s already well-established on the Steam Deck, and it will be the operating system for the upcoming Steam Machine, too.
Most Zorin OS 18 downloads came from Windows users
The developers say more than three quarters of the Zorin OS 18 downloads come from Windows users, so it goes to show people are curious about making a change, rather than simply upgrading to Windows 11. That figure accounts for at least 1,500,000 of users. The Linux distro is notable for its customizable appearance, which allows you to change the desktop layout to something you’re more accustomed to, whether than be Windows, macOS, or other Linux distros.

Importantly for users skipping the Windows 11 upgrade on the basis of compatibility, Zorin OS is said to work on computers “as old as 15 years,” so you can keep using your current desktop for longer. After all, not everyone needs a modern PC if they rarely use it, or only do so for light workloads.
Now, the thing about this 2 million figure is that it doesn’t guarantee every single of these downloads followed through to fully installing Zorin OS. Likewise, it’s impossible to know the retention rate of those that did install Zorin OS and ditch Windows, whether it was once and for all or just a quick taste test. Even so, the simple fact just a single Linux distro can hit 2 million downloads following the end of Windows 10 support – 1.5 million of those being from Windows users – is a promising sign for the open-source operating system.
