It’s CES week and we’ve seen a ton of exciting hardware reveals at this year’s event. There has been plenty to talk about when it comes to graphics thanks to the launch of Nvidia’s RTX 50 series as well as the RX 9000 series GPUs, led by the RX 9070 XT (which AMD seemed reluctant to talk about on the big stage). In any case, one of the biggest reveals was Nvidia’s new DLSS 4 technology and its claims of doubling performance compared to the RTX 40-series.
Probably the first thing to know about DLSS 4 is that one key feature is exclusive to the RTX 50 series – Multi Frame Generation. A natural progression of frame gen on the 40-series, the name gives away what it does, delivering up to three AI-generated frames, boosting FPS tremendously. And now, just following that, the popular upscaling and frame gen tool Lossless Scaling has unlocked a frame gen multiplier up to 20x.
Lossless Scaling gets LSFG 3 for its first anniversary
The first anniversary of LSFG (Lossless Scaling Frame Generation) has arrived and with it comes a new major update. There are three key patch notes to know about with the latest Lossless Scaling update. These are listed on the tool’s patch notes here and go as follows:
- Better quality
- Reduced flickering and border artifacts, with noticeable enhancements in motion clarity and overall smoothness.
- Lower GPU load
- A 40% reduction for X2 mode compared to LSFG 2 (non-performance mode). Over 45% reduction for multipliers above X2 compared to LSFG 2 (non-performance mode).
The “Resolution Scale” feature remains an excellent way to further reduce GPU load. For instance, setting it to 90% roughly aligns with the LSFG 2 “Performance” mode.
- A 40% reduction for X2 mode compared to LSFG 2 (non-performance mode). Over 45% reduction for multipliers above X2 compared to LSFG 2 (non-performance mode).
- Improved latency
- Latency testing with the OSLTT tool (at 40 base FPS, X2) shows approximately 24% better end-to-end latency compared to LSFG 2.
- Unlocked multiplier
- LSFG 3 also introduces an unlocked multiplier, now capped at X20.
An important note for the unlocked multiplier is that there are a few suggested settings to avoid poor latency. On top of that, locking your game’s framerate is recommended at 1080p. There’s also a UI update beta you can opt into (pictured below), here’s how to join if you want to test out the new interface:
- Open Steam
- Navigate to Lossless Scaling in your library
- Right-click and select Properties
- Go to the Betas tab and select “beta” from the dropdown
- Your feedback on the new UI is invaluable as we continue to improve
