Marathon is Bungie’s latest first-person shooter, first announced to the world back in May 2023. Ever since its initial reveal, fans of Bungie have been waiting to see what the studio behind Destiny and Halo has been working on. Marathon has been available to pre-order for a little while, and the game currently tops Steam’s top sellers list in the U.S.

Last weekend, Bungie hosted a free playtest called Server Slam, giving players a chance to try the game early. The event attracted a large number of players and gave many their first glimpse of gameplay. And if you have been counting down the days until the full launch, the wait is almost over, as Marathon is officially releasing today, March 5.

When does Marathon launch today?

According to Bungie, Marathon will release on March 5 at 10 AM PST across all platforms (PC, PS5, and Xbox). Of course, local time will depend on where in the world you reside. To make things easier for you, we’ve put together a list of release times for different regions below.

  • Los Angeles – 10 AM PST (March 5)
  • New York City – 1 PM EST (March 5)
  • London – 6 PM GMT (March 5)
  • Berlin – 7 PM CET (March 5)
  • Mumbai – 11:30 PM IST (March 5)
  • Tokyo – 3 AM JST (March 6)
  • Sydney – 5 AM AEDT (March 6)
  • Auckland – 7 AM NZDT (March 6)

We’ve also added a countdown clock above, so you can track the exact seconds remaining until launch. If you can’t see this timer, it means the game has already released, and you can jump in now. Plus, if you’re interested, another big game launching today is Slay the Spire 2, so be sure to check that out as well.

What is Marathon all about?

As for what the game offers, in Marathon, players travel to the sci-fi world of Tau Ceti IV, a deserted colony filled with valuable loot, rival Runners, and hostile security forces. The main objective is simple: enter dangerous zones, collect as much gear and resources as possible, and then escape safely before other players or enemies take you down. The game mixes exploration with fast-paced PvP combat, so calm scavenging moments can quickly turn into intense fights.

Players can go into matches alone or with a crew of two or three. During each run, you will search abandoned research facilities, security outposts, and open areas while dealing with enemies, environmental hazards, and other players trying to steal the same loot. Gear you collect can be used to upgrade your character and prepare for future runs. Simply put, it’s an extraction shooter.

The game also features six Runner shells that define different playstyles, such as Recon or Destroyer. These can be customized with weapons, implants, and upgrades found during missions. There is also a faction system where completing contracts helps unlock stronger starting gear and other benefits as the season progresses.
