Metro Redux is getting a free next-gen update this month

More than a decade after the release of Metro Redux, 4A Games is returning to the first two games in the series with a major upgrade for modern hardware. The studio has announced the Metro Redux Next-Gen Update, which will bring visual and performance improvements to both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux.
The best part is that existing owners won’t need to purchase the games again (just like The Witcher 3 Remastered earlier this week). The next-gen upgrade will be completely free for anyone who already owns either title. PC players will get the update first on October 22, followed by PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players on October 29. The console versions in Japan, however, will arrive sometime in November.
What’s new in Metro Redux next-gen?
While the update isn’t changing the core experience, 4A Games is improving several areas to make both games better suited to current hardware. Players can expect upgraded textures, improved animations, richer environmental details, better audio, and refinements to lighting and shadows. The developer says these changes are being made while preserving the original atmosphere and visual identity of the games.

When it comes to consoles, Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux will support native 4K at 60 FPS or upscaled 4K at 120 FPS on supported hardware. Native versions are coming to PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X/S rather than simply relying on backward compatibility.
There are also platform-specific improvements. PS5 Pro players will get PSSR support, while Xbox Series X will support TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing. Xbox platforms are also getting Spatial Audio, Xbox Play Anywhere, and Xbox Handheld support.
PC players will be able to run the games at 4K with uncapped frame rates, while DLSS and Spatial Audio are also being added. Bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements are planned across every platform, with 4A Games set to provide complete patch notes when the updates arrive.
The announcement comes as the Metro series passes 50 million sales worldwide, giving 4A Games another reason to revisit its earlier titles. It also arrives ahead of Metro 2039, the next entry in the series, which is scheduled to launch on February 4.
