Microsoft is already handing out bans after Forza Horizon 6 leaks ahead of launch due to Steam preload blunder
Table of Contents
It seems that Microsoft (or Playground Games) has made a critical error while preparing for the Forza Horizon 6 launch. Users are already playing the latest release, reportedly due to a lack of encryption on the game’s preload files on Steam. Evidence shows people playing a cracked version, and Microsoft has yet to comment on the leak, but bans are starting to occur.
Forza Horizon’s depot on SteamDB reveals a 155.63 GiB disk size (or 139.53 GiB when compressed), so it seems like it’s a pretty complete package. The game is set to release next week on May 19, with early access starting as early as May 15 for those who bought the Premium Edition. Pre-loading has been available since the start of the month.

The SteamDB data clearly shows a seemingly complete list of files, including the game’s executable (forzahorizon6.exe) and other important content such as DLLs and media folders. The 155.63 GiB disk size claimed on SteamDB translates to around 167 GB, which is exactly how much storage is listed in the official system requirements (an SSD is also required).

This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s playable directly through Steam, though reports reveal Forza Horizon 6 being played offline, likely through a cracked version produced as a result of the leaked files.
It’s unclear at the moment how Microsoft will respond to the leak. Some of those playing the game early say they’re using a ‘burner’ account in case of a ban wave. It seems that the devs are able to identify those playing this early version, with reports now coming through of bans (via Reddit).
This leak only affects the PC version of the game – Forza Horizon 6 will also be released to Xbox Series X|S at the same time as Steam. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members will also be able to play on day one. Microsoft recently chopped down the price of those two tiers, with Ultimate dropping from to $29.99, down to $22.99 as of April 2026.
