Those who have been using Windows from the start know how much the Snipping Tool has evolved. And now, according to a new leak, Microsoft is testing a new feature to make it even better. These days, the Snipping Tool lets you take screenshots and even record videos (or create GIFs) for your whole screen or a select area.

It also has OCR (optical character recognition) that lets you extract text from screenshots, a feature that has made the lives of many Windows users easier. And now, you’ll soon be able to add text to an image after taking a screenshot, at last.

Snipping Tool will soon let you add text

The feature was spotted by PhantomOfEarth on X, a Windows insider who has leaked several features in the past. The insider posted a video on their X account, which shows how the new text feature works. No longer will you have to save your screenshot and move to a different program to add a simple piece of text.

As you can see in the video, there is a new ‘T’ (text) button, which users can click to insert text anywhere on the image. You can choose from different fonts, select the text size, and use basic formatting options like Bold or Italic. You can also change the color of the text.

Having the ability to add text to images after taking a screenshot is such a basic feature, one that should’ve been added ages ago. However, it’s great to see that Microsoft is finally implementing it. It’s currently in the testing phase, and we don’t know exactly when it will be released for everyone, but you can expect it to arrive through a Windows 11 update soon.
