The Xbox App has expanded to become quite a bit more important for gaming experiences on Windows. Particularly if you’re on a handheld, such as the Acer Atlas 8, which boots straight into Xbox mode as a more cut-back version of the OS and gives back performance on the small PCs.
But there are still plenty of improvements to be made, as I find in my review; sometimes it was still quite slow to boot and get going, particularly when compared to the Steam Deck that’s based on Linux instead. Well, that latest update out for Insiders might now be changing that.

November 2026 Xbox update
The new update is currently out for Insiders, Xbox’s branch of beta-testing software, giving the segment of those opting in the new version of the app. That comes with a reported 60% faster launch time as well as making it easier to find games, connect with friends, and play from the new version.
