Walmart had to patch an Ocarina of Time remake banana discount that slashed $20 off the asking price

After a long wait, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is finally available on the Nintendo Switch 2. The highly anticipated remake has been attracting plenty of attention, especially from fans who have been waiting to experience the classic adventure with updated visuals and improvements. However, just as the game launched, Walmart customers discovered a rather unusual way to save money on it, and all they needed was a banana.
The unexpected discount was first spotted by popular gaming deals account Wario64, which shared the trick on X. According to the account, customers could purchase The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for around $49.99 at Walmart, instead of its regular $69.99 price, by adding a banana to their order.
However, there were a few conditions. Buyers had to select the store pickup option, add a banana to their cart alongside the game, and apply one of four promotional codes: SAVE3X, FAST30, TRIPLE10, or DOUBLE10. If everything worked correctly, the discount would bring the game’s price down by around $20.

It was certainly an unusual deal, especially considering that the game had only just launched. Nintendo’s first-party titles rarely receive major discounts immediately after release, so being able to save $20 on launch day was a pretty attractive offer. Unfortunately, the trick didn’t last very long. Shortly after sharing the original deal, Wario64 posted another update suggesting that Walmart had already noticed what was happening.
In other words, the retailer appeared to have adjusted the pricing, preventing customers from getting the game for the previously reported $49.99. Walmart hasn’t provided an official explanation for the unusual discount, so it’s unclear exactly why adding a banana allowed the promotional codes to reduce the price.
The good news is that while Ocarina of Time is back at its regular price at Walmart, there is still another way to save money on the remake, particularly for buyers in Europe. Instant Gaming is currently offering The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for €54.29, which is around 10% cheaper than its regular €59.99 price. This means European buyers can save €5.70 by purchasing the game through the platform instead of paying full price on the Nintendo eShop.
The discount is also available in the United Kingdom, where the game is listed for £45.32, representing a similar 10% reduction. While this isn’t quite as impressive as Walmart’s short-lived $20 discount, it’s still a decent offer for a major Nintendo release that has only just arrived.
