Microsoft quietly removes 32GB RAM recommendation for Windows 11, while it continues to sell 8GB laptops

It was only a few months ago that Microsoft was suggesting 32GB of RAM as the ideal amount for a worry-free Windows 11 experience, especially for gamers who play demanding AAA titles or use lots of mods. At the same time, the company described 16GB as the practical starting point for most users. However, it now appears Microsoft has quietly changed its stance.
Microsoft has removed the Windows Learning Center articles that recommended 32GB of RAM. Instead of displaying the original pages, the links now redirect users to the Learning Center homepage. While Microsoft hasn’t explained why the articles were taken down, the move comes as the ongoing memory shortage continues to drive RAM prices higher.
The ‘optimize your gaming PC setup’ page has disappeared
One of the removed articles focused on optimizing a gaming PC and said that 32GB is “ideal for serious players who run the most demanding titles or use heavy mods”. While it may have been scrubbed from the site, it’s still viewable thanks to Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine – the most recent capture of the page online is from March 12, 2026. The earliest capture with the homepage redirect is May 2, so the change happened some time between those dates.

Another page described 32GB as the “no worries” configuration for Windows 11 users. Both recommendations attracted criticism after memory prices surged, making 32GB kits much more expensive than they were when the guidance was originally published.
8GB hardware is still being sold by Microsoft
Interestingly, Microsoft itself has released several new devices with only 8GB of RAM as the base configuration in the past year or so, including the Surface Pro 12, Surface Laptop 13, and Surface Laptop for Business. This made the earlier recommendation seem difficult to justify, especially when many buyers purchasing Microsoft’s own hardware would not meet what the company previously described as the ideal amount of memory.

Despite removing the recommendations, Microsoft hasn’t changed Windows 11’s official minimum hardware requirements, which still list 4GB of RAM as the minimum needed to install the operating system. However, most users agree that Windows 11 runs much better with more memory, especially if multiple apps or browser tabs are open at the same time.
At the moment, Microsoft hasn’t officially commented on why the Learning Center articles were removed. However, with RAM prices remaining high and the company focusing on improving Windows 11’s efficiency on lower-memory systems, it seems Microsoft is moving away from promoting 32GB as the recommended configuration for Windows users, even gamers.
