We’re drawing close to the end of support for Windows 10, which means plenty of people are upgrading at long last. You’ll find (thanks to Steam’s monthly survey) that PC gamers are finally moving on from Windows 10, whether they like it or not. And if you’re still clinging to the previous version, Microsoft wants to assure you that Windows 11 is the most stable version of the operating system to date.

In a recent blog post titled ‘Resilience in action for Windows devices‘, the company boasts that Windows 11 24H2 is “our most reliable version of Windows yet” based on comparative failure rates. It also offers a reason why the BSOD is no longer blue.

Failure rates and unexpected restarts drop by 24%

On Windows 11 24H2, you’re no longer met by a blue screen; you’re met by a black screen instead. At least the BSOD acronym is left unscathed. The good news is that users can expect to see this unexpected restart problem happen less often.

“We’re also proud to share that Windows 11 24H2 is our most reliable version of Windows yet. Compared to Windows 10 22H2, failure rates for unexpected restarts have dropped by 24%. These improvements reflect deep collaboration across engineering, design, and user research teams and a commitment to making Windows more resilient for everyone.”

The failure rate ‘Reliability telemetry’ data was collected by Microsoft in 2025.

As well as crashes happening less frequently, Microsoft has streamlined the process so users aren’t left stuck waiting on a blue screen. It claims that users will spend “just 2 seconds” instead of 40 seconds on the crash screen, thanks to significant improvements made to crash dump collection. This is based on memory dump write speed data dating back to October 2022.
