If you’ve got an AMD GPU, you can find some great new additions by updating your graphics drivers to the preview version. The AFMF (AMD Fluid Motion Frames) 2 technical preview is getting an upgrade, which the company is saying is a major advancement in frame generation in the technology. Along with some optimizations for games and fixing some issues, there is a lot to see in this preview.
Starting off with AFMF 2, it aims to improve HYPR-RX and frame generation for your hardware even when the game you’re playing a game that doesn’t include it. This preview adds a lower latency and higher performance with new modes. There is faster motion optimization too for smoother gameplay and higher FPS when there’s a lot going on in the game. It also improves borderless fullscreen support, expands API support for, and adds Radeon Chill support.
All combined, you can now enjoy great improvements to your framerate in any game you play it. Especially handy on some older hardware that might be a few generations old now. That being the main addition to the preview, we’ll go through how to use it and what else is added.
Turn on AFMF 2 and optimize
To turn on AFMF2, it can be used in a game that uses OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX 11 and 12. These APIs are what AMD plugs into to use its optimizations. To enable it, you just toggle on HYPR-RX or Fluid Motion 2 in the Adrenalin software. Then you can load it into the game and play it in exclusive or borderless full-screen mode with v-sync disabled. This should automatically run now and can be checked with the in-game overlay (Alt+R).
AFMF 2 introduces new modes that automatically tune for the best experience on your config but can be adjusted. The high search is enabled for 1440p resolutions and above. Whilst there is a performance mode to reduce the overhead frame-generation overhead, used but default enabled with onboard graphics. But Quality may be better for those after some better-looking options. These can be changed in the Advanced View of HYPR-RX.
Supported GPUs:
- AMD Radeon 700M
- AMD Radeon 800M
- AMD Radeon RX 6000
- AMD Radeon RX 7000
Other changes and fixes
Firstly the AFMF 2 technical preview includes optimizations and improvements for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. That gives the potential to use the frame generation mode alongside the FSR 2 ability in the game settings.
There are also a few fixes, including AFMF becoming inactive after enabling some on-screen overlays. Performance metrics display N/A after switch configs have been resolved. Baldur’s Gate 3 crashes on AI 300 processors have been fixed. Along with intermittent driver timeouts after Xbox Game Bar is opened with AFMF 2 and RSR are active in some Vulkan games.
