A new report suggests that an upcoming Batman Arkham game has been canceled following major layoffs at Meta, bringing an end to plans that were said to be quietly moving forward behind the scenes.

The Batman Arkham series has seen very little activity over the past decade. After Batman: Arkham Knight was released in 2015, the franchise mostly shifted toward smaller or VR-focused projects. The latest entry, Batman: Arkham Shadow, launched in 2024 as a Meta Quest 3 exclusive and was met with strong feedback from both players and critics. Because of that positive reception, many fans expected a sequel to follow.

Batman: Arkham Shadow sequel reportedly canceled

According to Aftermath, that sequel was already in development. The project was reportedly being handled by Sanzaru Games, not Camouflaj, the studio that developed Arkham Shadow. However, Meta recently shut down Sanzaru as part of a large round of layoffs that impacted around 1,000 employees. And with the studio closed, all of its ongoing projects were canceled, including the new Batman game.

Camouflaj has not been shut down, but it was also heavily affected by the layoffs. Former employees claim the studio has been reduced to a very small team, with most leadership roles eliminated. The remaining staff are reportedly working on a new user experience for upcoming Meta hardware, not on new games.

Meta has not officially confirmed the cancellation, but given the shutdown of Sanzaru and the situation at Camouflaj, the project appears to be dead in the water. For now, it seems Meta’s focus on developing major VR games has come to an end.

Still, the Batman Arkham series may not be over entirely. Rocksteady Games, the studio behind the original Arkham trilogy, is expected to be working on a new Batman title. After the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady is rumored to be returning to the Arkham universe, though any new release is likely still years away.
