Activision has cleared the air around one question Call of Duty fans may have had, and in doing so, it has also confirmed a major milestone for the franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is officially the final Call of Duty title released on the PlayStation 4, marking the end of an era for the long-running console.

This confirmation came after rumors started spreading that the next Call of Duty game, widely expected to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, was still being developed for last-gen hardware. The speculation quickly gained attention, especially among players who were worried that the series might continue to be held back by older systems. However, Activision stepped in and shut down those claims, clearly stating that the next Call of Duty is not being developed for the PS4.

No, the next Call of Duty won’t be playable on PS4

That statement effectively confirms that Black Ops 7 was the final entry for the aging console. The PS4 has had a long run with the franchise, hosting more than a dozen Call of Duty releases over the years. But as games continue to become more demanding, it was only a matter of time before developers moved on. It seems likely that the Xbox One is also being dropped.

Recent Call of Duty titles have already shown the limits of older hardware. Games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launched on both current and last-gen systems, but the experience on PS4 often came with noticeable compromises, such as lower image quality, performance issues, and longer load times. The same can be said for Black Ops 7, which launched a year apart.

Activision confirmed late last year that it won’t be doing “back-to-back releases” of Modern Warfare and Black Ops anymore, hence why players expect a fourth Modern Warfare title to arrive next.

With the next title skipping PS4, that shift is now happening. Future Call of Duty games will be built specifically for newer platforms like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This should allow the developers to push better graphics, smoother performance, and more advanced features without worrying about older limitations.

Of course, this also means that players who are still on PS4 will not be able to access future mainline entries unless they upgrade. While that might disappoint some, it is a natural step as the industry moves forward.
