Nvidia’s third version of the RTX 5090 is rumored to be launched a month after the 5050
Table of Contents
Along with rumors of the RTX 5050 desktop GPU release date at the very beginning of July, there is now unofficial word that Nvidia is gearing up to launch the (tentatively named) RTX 5090DD this August. If you weren’t already aware, there are currently two versions of the RTX 5090, the other model being the RTX 5090D for the Chinese market with some cut-back specs due to US export restrictions.
Following the news that the RTX 5090D was seemingly discontinued, with no immediate replacement, it seems likely that Nvidia is all set to launch yet another revised version of the card in China. However, with further US sanctions in place, rumor has it that the card that will replace the RTX 5090D is cut back even further, this time losing some of its memory capacity.
RTX 5090 DD rumored for Chinese market this August
Our first clue for the RTX 5090 DD (or whatever the finalized name may be) was a list of specs posted by well-known hardware leaker kopite7kimi. They claimed the revised model will retain its 575W power draw, but will drop from 32GB of VRAM down to 24GB, the same as the 4090, albeit on the newer GDDR7 standard. This also results in reduced memory bandwidth.
| Specification | RTX 5090 | RTX 5090D | RTX 5090DD (rumored) |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPU | GB202-300 | GB202-250 | GB202-240 |
| CUDA Cores | 21,760 | 21,760 | 21,760 |
| VRAM | 32GB GDDR7 | 32GB GDDR7 | 24GB GDDR7 |
| Memory bandwidth | 512-bit | 512-bit | 384-bit |
| Memory speed | 28 Gbps | 28 Gbps | 28 Gbps |
| Tensor Cores | 5th Generation 3,352 AI TOPS | 5th Generation 2,375 AI TOPS | Unknown |
| TDP | 575W | 575W | 575W |
According to Chinese outlet Benchlife, “the GB202-240 GeForce RTX 5090 DD (tentative) is expected to be released in August” [translated]. This comes following the news that the RTX 5050 could be coming as soon as July 1st.
Nvidia did something similar with the RTX 4090 and RTX 4090D, but it never had to create a third version of the card as a result of further restrictions. It’s worth noting that the 40-series flagship actually got its core count and TDP reduced for the Chinese market. This generation, however, it was the Tensor Cores and AI capabilities that were the focus of cutbacks.
