AMD believes that ‘overclocking factor’ will play a major role in influencing 7800X3d owners to upgrade to the latest 9800X3D. Speaking to PCGuide, AMD’s Product and Business Development Manager, Martijn Boonstra, claimed the “limits are now gone” with the 3D V-cache technology, allowing both casual and enthusiast PC owners to squeeze more power from the chip.

It’s safe to say that AMD’s newly-released 9800X3D has been hugely successful, with the latest 3D V-cache part selling out in minutes of going live on popular retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, and more.

The chip’s popularity comes alongside a slew of ultra-positive Ryzen 7 9800X3D reviews from tech outlets that rightly highlighted the chip’s impressive gaming performance – with one individual hitting over 1500 FPS on Valorant.

The brand seemingly released the 9800X3D with near-perfect timing, as Intel was not only seeing instability issues in their 13th and 14th Gen chips, but was also receiving criticism over their latest Core Ultra 200 series CPUs which, despite being efficient, were not pleasing tier 1 tech reviewers when it came to outright gaming performance or generational uplift.

With that in mind, we managed to sit down with AMD to ask them; what they thought of the chip’s launch, who the 9800X3D was targeted to, and who was best suited to use it.

AMD targets older generation users, but 7800X3D owners will also consider the chip

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Martijn Boonstra, AMD Product and Business Development Manager, to find out what the brand thought of the recent launch. While he was clearly impressed with the chip’s launch-week stats, much of the conversation was steered around the 9800X3D’s design and how it impacted gaming performance – with large portions spent discussing the “overclocking factor” this part brings to the table.

Martijn stated that; “you could definitely say the limits are now gone compared to the previous generation 3D V-cache (processors) because of the overclocking ability, which puts it closer to the non-stacked cash parts in terms of their ultimate frequency and performance that you can squeeze from the parts.” – a pretty exciting feature, especially for those that have cooling advanced enough to push the 9800X3D to the next level.

This, naturally, raised the question of, who exactly is the 9800X3D targeted towards? to which Martijn answered “I think with every launch you will find that you have your ultra enthusiasts which upgrade every single generation whenever there’s like 5 to 10% more performance or even more or sometimes even less to be had because they just want the latest and greatest in technology….. And I think if you look at this part, what sets it apart for the 7800X3D, as I touched on earlier is the overclocking factor as well…. that will drive some of the 7800X3D owners to also consider the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.”.

The 7800X3D is already a very capable chip, especially when it comes to gaming, so it’s a bold statement to suggest users would consider upgrading so soon. Obviously, it shows AMD is incredibly confident about the 9800X3D, especially when it comes to gaming performance and overclocking potential.

Let’s be honest, the overclocking factor, as Martijn puts it, is a huge draw for the new chips. None of the previous X3D parts offered fully unlocked overclocking – making this a unique part for both gamers and overclocking enthusiasts. For me, I’m not sure I’d be rushing out to buy the 9800X3D if I already owned the 7800X3D, but I can certainly see scenarios where owners would definitely do that.
