PlayStation disc sales aren’t dead, especially in Europe, where Marvel’s Wolverine physical copies overtake digital
According to a new report from Christopher Dring, of The Game Business, 35% of Marvel’s Wolverine sales so far have been for physical copies of game. That’s around 756,000 boxed copies in total (based on a total of around 2.16 million copies). And over the pond in Europe, physical sales jump drastically to 51%. Ex-Sony president Shuhei Yoshida may describe himself as a “Totally digital consumer” these days, but it’s clear not every PlayStation fan is the same.
It seems gamers are starting to vote with their wallets by picking up physical copies following Sony’s controversial choice to stop producing PlayStation games discs, effective January 2028, though there’s no current suggestion of a U-turn by the company. Marvel’s Wolverine launched last month as a PS5 exclusive – and it’s expected to stay that way now that Sony has stopped porting its first-party single-player games to PC.
Gamers are still buying physical media in 2026
Further stats from The Game Business report reveal that several other PlayStation titles are selling relatively well on disc worldwide: 46% of sales for Silent Hill: Townfall, 36% for The Blood of Dawnwalker, and 30% for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. We may expect to see even higher percentages in Europe. Love for physical media varies by country, but we saw an immediate reaction in Spain from the likes of GAME España when Sony announced its plans to ditch physical discs.

Sitting at an estimated 2.16 million, Marvel’s Wolverine total number of sales, digital and physical included, isn’t reaching the same heights as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but the new Wolverine game still outsells the likes of Astro Bot and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. It’s running at a similar rate as Ghost of Yōtei.
In other console game sales news, the fact Grand Theft Auto VI is a digital-only title hasn’t stopped fans from reserving their copies, with nearly 9 out of 10 pre orders being for the more expensive ($100) Ultimate Edition, a per data from around a couple of months ago. The blockbuster title launches on November 19 and Rockstar Games has at least launched some physical media for it (in the form of a Collector’s Box and a GTA 6 soundtrack album, the latter on vinyl and CD).
