Nearly 9 out of 10 GTA 6 pre orders are for the $100 Ultimate Edition, latest data suggests

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive opened GTA 6 pre-orders on June 25, and unsurprisingly, they’re performing incredibly well, despite launching without a disc version. We’ve already heard that the $100 Ultimate Edition is selling the best – again, without any kind of physical media attached – and it turns out nearly 9/10 customers have opted for the more expensive edition.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick had previously said pre-orders were “skewing more” towards the Ultimate Edition, leaving the $79.99 Standard Edition as second favorite. However, new data from digital intelligence firm Sensor Tower suggests it’s much more of a one-sided affair. Reportedly, 90% of Xbox buyers opt for Ultimate, while 88.5% on PlayStation do the same.
GTA 6 Ultimate Edition pre-orders are way above the industry average
According to Gamesindustry.biz, Sensor Tower has shared data surrounding the GTA 6 pre-orders. Zelnick himself noted that the higher level of premium edition sales “might be a reflection” of the most avid customers being the quickest to pre-order. Karl Kontus, the SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, echoes that notion, but says GTA 6 is an extraordinary case.

“[Special Editions] always tend to perform well during the preorder period. That being said, I have never seen a 90% premium share before. A 50% premium share during preorders is a great number. Typical premium shares for games tend to be at around 10–20%.”
Karl Kontus, SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz
Kontus says he expects the massive sales gap between the two editions to shrink, but at the same time, “it’s likely it’ll stay significantly above the industry standard”. Once we make it to the GTA 6 release date (currently penciled in for November 19), Kontus expects the split to be decided by how many casual players pick up the game.
GTA 6’s next big marketing push is the “An Extended Look” special premiering on Netflix on August 27. It will be available for free on Rockstar Games’ YouTube six hours later, but its spot on Netflix should be a boon for attracting the more casual viewers. Strauss Zelnick suggests “everyone” will be watching the trailer, and he’s given very little away regarding what it will involve.
