RAM is so expensive that someone traded their DDR5 kit for an RTX 5070 Ti, and it’s not even close to a good deal

RAM prices have increased significantly over the past few months, and they show no signs of slowing down. Even SSDs are also more expensive than before, making it difficult for PC gamers to upgrade these two key areas of their rig. And recently, we’ve come across someone trading a high-capacity RAM kit for one of Nvidia’s mid-to-high range cards, but it’s a pretty bad deal.
According to a Facebook post spotted by user Olark29 on X, someone traded their 192GB Corsair DDR5 RAM kit for a PNY GeForce RTX 5070 Ti. They also had the option to get the ASUS 27” QD-OLED 240Hz monitor, but they decided to go with the GPU instead. While this might sound like a decent deal at first, the skyrocketed RAM prices beg to differ.
192GB of DDR5 RAM for an RTX 5070 Ti
A quick search online will show that this specific 192GB DDR5 kit currently sells for up to $2,250, while the PNY RTX 5070 Ti goes for around $750 – its MSRP set by Nvidia earlier this year. That means the user potentially could have traded their kit for either the RTX 4090 or RTX 5090 (assuming someone was willing to make that trade). It would’ve been slightly better if they had picked the ASUS monitor instead, as it’s currently $1,199 on Amazon.

In any case, the user was likely unaware of the actual value of their RAM kit. Right now, RAM and SSD prices are rising quickly due to the AI boom. Even Micron has decided to exit the consumer market to focus on demand from data centers. If you’re planning to upgrade your RAM, it’s probably best to wait for prices to settle, as even a 32GB DDR5 Corsair kit now costs over $400, which is absurd. And if you decide to sell yours, make sure to check its current value first.
