Popular RAM brand Crucial axed, so its owners can focus on “faster-growing segments” like AI

Crucial, one of the most well-known consumer RAM and SSD brands, is coming to an end. Micron, the owner of the Crucial brand, has officially announced that it is exiting the Crucial consumer business so it can focus on what it calls “faster-growing segments,” mainly AI and data-center products.
This news is a blow to PC builders. For almost 30 years, Crucial has been a trusted name for memory and storage. Many people bought Crucial RAM and SSDs because they were affordable, reliable, and easy to find at major retailers. But Micron says the tech world is changing fast, and demand for memory in AI servers and data centers has exploded.
Demand for AI data centers overshadows gaming products
According to Micron, the AI boom has put huge pressure on supply. Data centers now need more RAM, more SSDs, and faster hardware than ever before. This has also caused the prices of RAM and SSDs to skyrocket, especially the former. To keep up with this demand, Micron says it needs to shift its focus and resources away from consumer products and toward enterprise customers.
In the official statement, Micron explained that the Crucial consumer business will wind down completely by the end of fiscal Q2 2026. Until then, Crucial products will continue shipping through normal consumer channels, and all current products will still be covered by warranty and support. In other words, customers will not be left without help, even after the transition.
“The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments.”
Sumit Sadana, EVP and Chief Business Officer at Micron Technology
Micron also shared that its enterprise products will continue under the Micron brand. These products are mainly meant for commercial clients, data-center customers, and large tech companies that need high-capacity memory and storage for servers and AI workloads.

One important part of the announcement is that Micron plans to reduce the impact on its employees. The company says it will offer team members new positions within Micron wherever possible, instead of simply cutting jobs. Micron’s Chief Business Officer, Sumit Sadana, said the decision was “difficult” but necessary. He also thanked the entire Crucial community, including the customers, partners, and employees, for supporting the brand for 29 years.
For now, Crucial products are still available, but once the transition period ends, the brand will disappear from store shelves. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your RAM or SSD, this may be the last chance to grab something from Crucial before it’s gone for good.
We’re also starting to see GPUs being affected, as Radeon prices are expected to rise, and Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 50 Super cards are reportedly delayed due to costs related to VRAM.
