Retroid is upgrading 8GB Pocket 5 and Flip 2 buyers to the 12GB model free of charge for a limited time

Retroid Pocket 5 and Retroid Pocket Flip 2 buyers are getting a free upgrade after the company confirmed that its 8GB + 128GB stock has been “completely depleted” – so it decided to just give customers 12GB versions instead. The Retroid Pocket 5 is the predecessor to Retroid’s current flagship retro handheld, the Pocket 6 (which is also available with 12GB of RAM).
According to an official update shared on the company’s Discord server, all unfulfilled orders of the 8GB models will be automatically upgraded to the 12GB + 128GB version at no extra cost. Customers do not need to take any action, as the upgrade will be applied before shipment. Better yet, customers can continue to take advantage of this ‘offer’ for a limited time.
A free upgrade for fans of Retroid’s retro handhelds
The move is good news for customers who purchased the lower-spec version and were waiting for their order to be fulfilled. Instead of receiving a delay, cancellation, or the original 8GB model, they will now receive a handheld with 4GB of additional RAM without paying any extra. Retroid also confirmed that new orders placed now for the Retroid Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2 will also receive the 12GB + 128GB configuration while current promotional pricing remains available.

At the moment, the Retroid Pocket 5 is available for $199, down from its recommended price of $219. The Retroid Pocket Flip 2 is currently priced at $209, which is $20 less than its original $229 price tag. This means that new buyers are also effectively receiving a free RAM upgrade during the transition period before the pricing change takes effect.
Retroid has stated that July 15 will mark the official transition to the 12GB + 128GB configuration as the new standard model for both handhelds. Once that happens, the company will implement a $10 price increase compared to the previous pricing. After the change, the Retroid Pocket 5 will be priced at $209, while the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 will increase to $219.
The Retroid Pocket 5 and Pocket Flip 2 have become popular Android handhelds thanks to their chipset, strong emulation capabilities, and more. The additional 4GB of RAM should provide more headroom for multitasking, demanding Android games, and emulators that benefit from extra memory.
