We quickly learned after GTA 6 pre-orders went live on June 25 that the game is launching without a disc. You may indeed buy GTA 6 boxed, but there’s no disc inside – just a download code. The same goes for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. And now, Rockstar has confirmed the game will be region-locked for PlayStation players, though the same restriction doesn’t apply to Xbox.

It wasn’t long after GTA 6 became available for pre-order that PlayStation announced it will stop producing discs altogether in January 2028, and a digital-only blockbuster launch like GTA 6 probably only reinforces its plans. Many gamers will have seen the online backlash following the bombshell announcement, which continues to rage on to this day – proposed blackouts included.

An article on Rockstar’s support website confirms physical versions will ship with a download code – “A disc will not be included in the box,” it reads. Due to the digital-only launch, regional restrictions must be considered. As such, PS5 customers are advised to avoid buying a copy from a retailer based in a different region, even if you think you found a great deal elsewhere.

PlayStation: Codes purchased in the following regions are to only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to a specific set of countries as follows:

  • Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is the launch date (November 19, 2026) due to regional regulations.

Rockstar has reportedly sold more pre-orders on PS5 than on Xbox Series X/S. Even if Microsoft has disputed online claims so far, it’s clear that PlayStation 5 marketing has been more widespread. In fact, Rockstar explicitly advertises that the game “Plays best on PS5” thanks to exclusive features such as haptic feedback and Tempest 3D AudioTech, alongside speedy SSD loading times.
