Nvidia’s RTX 50 series fails to impress in the new Mafia game, even AMD’s RX 9070 XT outperforms the RTX 5080

Mafia: The Old Country has (mostly) delighted fans of the series. Not only does it provide a solid single-player experience, but the graphics are also very impressive, though incredibly demanding when maxed out. Built on Unreal Engine 5.4, the game uses features like Lumen and Nanite to create beautiful lighting and detailed environments. However, these visuals come at a cost, as this game demands a lot of power from your graphics card.
And that’s where things get interesting. While most people expected Nvidia’s new RTX 50 series to easily dominate, AMD’s RX 9070 XT comes as a surprise contender by delivering better performance than the RTX 5080 – even though the Radeon card should be positioned to battle with the 5070 Ti.
RX 9070 XT beats RTX 5080 in Mafia: The Old Country benchmarks
One of the biggest surprises from the performance tests conducted by German publication ComputerBase was how well AMD’s RX 9070 XT handled Mafia: The Old Country compared to Nvidia’s new 50 series. At 1440p, the RX 9070 XT delivered an average of 78.9 FPS, while the RTX 5080 only managed 70.1 FPS. This is at the Epic preset with upscaling (DLSS 4 / FSR 4) in performance mode.

Even at 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160), AMD’s card kept up with 50.9 FPS, though the 5080 was slightly ahead with 52.2 FPS. The difference might seem small, but considering Nvidia usually leads in raw power, this shift is notable. Even when pushing the game at ultrawide resolution (3,440 x 1,440), the RX 9070 XT kept its lead, reaching 67.6 FPS compared to the RTX 5080’s 62.4 FPS.
At 1440p (16:9 and 21:9), only the RTX 5090 and RTX 4090 were ahead of the 9070 XT, and even AMD’s last-gen flagship 7900 XTX delivered better performance than the RTX 5080 at 2,560 x 1,440.

Both Nvidia and AMD also support frame generation, which helps boost FPS by creating additional frames between real ones. In Mafia, this feature works well on both sides. But DLSS Frame Generation has a problem; it creates ghosting effects around the main character, especially when HDR is enabled. This can be distracting and ruin the visual quality. AMD’s FSR Frame Generation, on the other hand, avoids this issue and offers a smoother experience overall.
