If the latest rumors are to be believed, then the AMD Radeon PRO W7900 could be ready to launch in June. The AI GPU with a dual-shot design set is primed to follow in the footsteps of the W7900 GPUs which came just this last April. Though not confirmed by AMD just yet, we take a look at the legitimacy of this rumor and what it could mean for those interested in getting their hands on this new GPU.
It’s not going to be the best GPU for gaming, but it doesn’t have to be. This workstation-focused video card looks to showcase AMD’s latest advancements in AI, and as we can see from the marketing graphic below, it’s ‘for extreme workloads’.
AMD Radeon PRO W7900 rumors swirling
The rumor itself originates from Hoang Anh Phu, an X user who has leaked several stories in the past, most notably the EPYC 4004 for the AM5 socket. The user has stated that the much anticipated AMD Radeon PRO W7900 is set to be launched in “early June”. This extension of the RDNA 3 lineups is set to be designed specifically for AI-related workloads, with a dual-slot cooler, updated build, and powered by the Navi 31 GPU.
The dual-slot coolers would be a particularly clever touch as it would allow for more efficient performance without compromising on space. Furthermore, they are also one of the defining features that differentiates it from its gaming counterparts like the RX 7900 XTX.
AI workloads
What is meant by a card that is designed specifically for AI workloads? Well, we can hazard a guess that it is likely referring to a dedicated GPU for generative AI tasks or LLM (Large Language Model) support. Despite its changes in purpose, the memory between the W7900 and W7900 PRO is unlikely to increase given that the original already has a whopping 48GB of GDDR6 memory. With the W7900 boasting a high MSRP of $3,999 upon its launch, this new W7900 PRO will likely come in somewhere similar.
This incredibly high price point will certainly put a lot of fans off, as very few will feel that it is worth such a cost. We will have to wait and see if the PRO can make a big splash if it does in fact launch in June. With a release date speculated so soon, it would make sense that the W7900 PRO could be announced at Computex 2024 in the coming weeks.
