Exclusively released in China and Europe last year, AMD is finally set to launch its Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card worldwide. Unfortunately, it’s seemingly set for a divisive opening day, with fans sharing praise and skepticism towards the upcoming GPU through social media sites.
In fact, the division within the online tech community is already on full display on Reddit, where many of the recently released RX 7900 GRE reviews have already been posted. Under one thread centering on Hardware Unboxed’s comprehensive video review, one Redditor noted: “It looks like a decent GPU for the price,” as the 7900 GRE is set to retail for $550. Though still relatively expensive, its price point is surprisingly lower than its China MSRP, which launched at a whopping 5299 RMB (around $727).
However, not everyone is convinced of the RX 7900 GRE’s capabilities, as another Redditor said that the “GRE is underwhelming” since it’s only $40 cheaper than the high-powered RTX 4070 Super. Now, it is worth noting that the 7900 GRE is intended to be more of a direct competitor to the 4070 since both share similar MSRPs. However, another user did point out that the latter is already priced lower by most retailers at around $530, giving it the edge in terms of overall value.
A fitting competitor to the RTX 4070?
Despite its perceived shortcomings, the RX 7900 GRE is undoubtedly a fitting competitor to its Nvidia equal, the RTX 4070. Based on AMD’s comparison, the former trumps the latter’s performance in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, The Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 by 25% or more.
This makes it ideal if you’re looking to build your first gaming PC around a graphically capable and long-lasting GPU. However, if you don’t mind splurging a bit more, you may as well opt for the RTX 4070 Super instead since it trumps both of the above graphics cards by a considerable margin.
If the sheer number of choices has you overwhelmed, we wouldn’t blame you. So, instead, check out our page comparing the RTX 4070 Super vs. RX 7700 XT to give you an idea of how it compares to another AMD GPU.
