Samson launched just two days ago, on April 8, but not all went exactly as hoped. While many players were excited to jump in, the experience has been far from smooth. A lot of users have reported bugs, crashes, and performance issues. Because of this, among other complaints, the game currently holds a Mixed rating on Steam, with only about 53% of reviews being positive.

The good news is that the developers are fully aware of the situation and have addressed it directly. In a recent statement, the team admitted that they “released a game with flaws” and acknowledged that many players are dealing with serious issues. They also made it clear that this is not acceptable and that they are actively working on fixing the game as quickly as possible. Founder of Liquid Swords, Christofer Sundberg, says that Samson, Tyndalston, and the game itself “will grow over time on all fronts”.

Samson performance patch fixes crashes and polishes up the game

To address the immediate problems, a new patch is scheduled to go live today (April 10). This update focuses on improving performance, stability, and overall gameplay. One of the main areas being worked on is performance optimization, especially fixing stuttering issues caused by PSO-related hitches.

Performance

  • Several performance fixes focusing on PSO related hitches (fixes stuttering related issues)
  • Fixed some misses with Slate
  • Fixed landscape RayTracingDynamicGeometry misses
  • bIgnoreMaskMateria & bRequireRTDynamicGeometryUpdate was not set correctly from landscape PSO precache dispatch since 5.7
  • NaniteLumenCard & NaniteShading misses
  • Fixed PSO misses due to FStaticMeshComponentHelper::CollectPSOPrecacheDataImpl fetching materials from LOD levels depending on MinLOD even for Nanite-enabled meshes which will render with LOD 0 materials

Crash fixes

  • Several crash fixes related to audio, animation and GPU
  • Crash fix for clearing UseDestructionHelp for vehicles with a timer
  • Fix for potential case where attempting to update a failed dispatch when losing warp governance could clear the callback lambda as it was being executed, causing a dangling this pointer and crash
  • Fixed various audio-related crashes, including one when closing the game
  • Avoid race conditions caused by writes to bIsCachedRayTracingInstanceValid and bDynamicRayTracingInstanceCachedDataDirty from parallel tasks
  • Force separate storage unit between ray tracing and non-ray tracing bits
  • Force separate storage unit between bIsCachedRayTracingInstanceValid and bDynamicRayTracingInstanceCachedDataDirty

The patch also includes several crash fixes related to audio, animation, and GPU usage. These were some of the biggest complaints from players, as crashes were happening frequently during gameplay and even when closing the game. On top of that, mission-related issues are being fixed, including bugs that prevented players from progressing or caused objectives to fail unexpectedly.

More updates

Gameplay improvements are also part of the update. The developers have adjusted NPC behavior, fixed AI issues, and improved interactions during combat and exploration. There are also general polish updates, such as better audio handling, improved animations, and fixes for visual glitches.

Another small but useful addition is the ability to create up to eight save files, giving players more flexibility when managing their progress. The developers have also confirmed that this is just the beginning. They plan to continue improving performance, fixing bugs, and polishing the game further in future updates.

The developers of Samson have been keen to talk to the media following the game’s launch, with Tech Director Fredrik Lönn even discussing the prospect of DLSS 5 implementation (no, it’s not being considered for the game right now).
