Sony has officially announced that the price of the PlayStation 5 in the U.S. is going up. The news came through an official blog post written by Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment. According to her, the decision was made because of the “challenging economic environment” that many global companies are facing right now.

Starting August 21, the updated retail prices for the consoles will be:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

Before this update, the standard PS5 was priced at $499.99, the Digital Edition at $449.99, and the PS5 Pro at $699.99. This means each model is seeing a $50 increase across the board. It’s not a huge jump, but for many buyers, it could cross a line in terms of affordability. Sony, however, has confirmed that the prices of accessories will remain the same as before, so there’s no change in that area, at the very least.

Prices were already changed elsewhere in the world

The global market has faced instability for quite some time now, mainly due to trade tariffs. Earlier in April this year, Sony adjusted the prices of its PS5 lineup across the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Each console saw an increase of about 10 to 15%. At that point, Sony explained the change by pointing to the “challenging economic environment,” which is the same reason given once again. This isn’t the first time the company has raised prices either. Back in 2022, Sony also increased the cost of the PS5 due to the rise of global inflation rates.

Sony’s decision follows similar moves from its competitors. Microsoft raised the price of its Xbox consoles earlier this year, and Nintendo also increased the price of the original Switch in some markets. With both competitors already making adjustments, it was only a matter of time before Sony raised the price of its PS5 lineup in the U.S., so the news doesn’t come as a huge surprise.
