Sony updates PS5 software yet again with security updates ahead of GTA 6 launch
Table of Contents
Sony has released yet another system software update for the PlayStation 5, and once again, security appears to be the main focus. The update arrives only a few weeks before the launch of GTA 6, at a time when the PS5 jailbreak community has been making significant progress in finding new ways to bypass the console’s security.
The latest update brings the PS5 system software to version 26.07-14.22.00 and has a download size of around 1.267GB. Sony hasn’t shared a long list of changes this time. In fact, the official patch notes only state that the company has made some security fixes to the system software, without explaining exactly what vulnerabilities have been addressed.
It seems like Sony is preparing for Grand Theft Auto VI
The timing of the update is interesting. Sony has been releasing firmware updates as jailbreak developers continue to target newer versions of the PS5 software. A jailbreak covering several older firmware versions was released earlier this year, and work has since continued on newer versions, including 14.10. This has created an ongoing cycle where new exploits are discovered before Sony attempts to close them through another system update.

GTA 6 could be another reason why keeping the PS5 secure is particularly important right now. Rockstar’s highly anticipated game is set to launch on November 19, and there has already been speculation that the game will require players to install a relatively recent version of the PS5 system software.
PlayStation Game Size previously claimed that GTA 6 would require at least firmware 14.10. However, following the arrival of the latest update, the account has suggested that the requirement may have moved to 14.22. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has officially confirmed that requirement, so it should still be treated as unofficial information for now.
Requiring newer firmware could make things more difficult for users who keep their consoles on older versions specifically for jailbreak purposes. It could also help Sony and Rockstar reduce the chances of GTA 6 being accessed through existing exploits shortly after launch. Everything said, the New Zealand trick is expected to be possible, allowing you to play up to 18 hours early.
