After a long wait, Valve finally launched the Steam Frame yesterday, revealing the price of its upcoming VR headset and opening reservations for those interested in securing one. The headset will be available in two storage options, while three optional accessories will be sold separately.

The Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset powered by SteamOS, but Valve is positioning it as a “streaming-first” device. It comes with a USB dongle that creates a direct wireless connection between the headset and a PC, allowing users to stream their PC VR games without needing a cable.

At the same time, Steam Frame is capable of running supported games locally. It can handle compatible Linux and Windows games using technologies such as Proton and FEX, while Android games can also run through Valve’s Lepton compatibility layer.

How much does the VR headset cost?

Valve will sell the Steam Frame in two configurations. The 256GB model costs $1,059, while the 1TB version is priced at $1,299. Both versions come with the headset, left and right tracked controllers, and the wireless USB dongle.

Those worried about storage won’t necessarily need to spend extra on the 1TB version either, as the Steam Frame includes a microSD card slot. This means owners will be able to expand their storage later if the built-in capacity isn’t enough.

Reservations are now live through Steam, though Valve is using a wait-list system rather than immediately allowing everyone to place an order. Users can join the list until September 17 at 10 AM PT, after which Valve will randomize the entries and begin selecting customers who will be given the opportunity to purchase the headset.

Valve still hasn’t provided an exact release date, so even those who secure a reservation don’t yet know exactly when the Steam Frame will begin shipping.

Valve has also announced three optional accessories for the Steam Frame. The first is the Ergonomic Accessories Kit, which costs $59 and includes a headset top strap, Index-style controller hand straps, and an extended light blocker designed to reduce light entering around the nose.

The company is also selling an official USB-C power supply for $29. Steam Frame charges through USB-C but doesn’t include a charger in the box, so buyers can either use a compatible charger they already own or purchase Valve’s option. If you already own a Steam Deck, the handheld’s charger will work – or you’ll need to use a USB-C charger with at least 45W power.

Finally, there’s a $49 Accessory Replacement Kit containing a replacement face gasket, head cushion, and light blocker. This is mainly intended for users who lose or damage the parts included with their headset.

Another major announcement is that every Steam Frame will include Half-Life: Alyx for buyers who don’t already own it. Valve has created a native ARM version of the game that runs directly on the headset, meaning a gaming PC isn’t required to play it.
