Steam Machine is getting E-Ink and Dot Matrix faceplates from JSAUX, and you can vote for which one comes first

Hardware accessory brand JSAUX is fully on board with Steam Machine peripherals, revealing earlier this week that it’s “already cooking” some custom faceplates. Now we have our first glimpse of them in the real world (not 3D renders), with three unique models on the way. Two of them offer an E-Ink design, while the third is what JSAUX calls “The fun one” – a Dot Matrix panel.
JSAUX was quick to question its fans on what they want from Steam Machine faceplates late last year, and given all the delays with the cubed mini PC itself, there has been a lot of time to ponder these peripherals. The company has settled on three different options, and is currently running a poll on its Discord server to ask fans which one should be released first.

- Mono E-Ink – Always-on display with low power that “blends naturally with the Steam Machine design”
- Color E-Ink – “Same idea” as the other E-Ink panel, but with a smaller screen and more colors
- Color Dot Matrix – Real-time updates with no lag and “Endless pixel-style possibilities”

JSAUX says that thanks to the low-power nature of E-Ink displays, both of these models (mono and color) come with a built-in battery for power, so nothing is draining the Steam Machine itself. However, the Color Dot Matrix model does require external power and utilizes the Steam Machine’s rear port. A separate Discord poll also asks whether this requirement is “acceptable”.
It has been a couple of weeks since Valve’s Steam Machine launched, shortly before it started shipping on June 30. The system is available from $1,049 (for the 512GB model), so it’s far from cheap. There’s no indication so far as to how much JSAUX’s custom faceplates will cost, but we should soon find out. At the time of writing, less than 20 hours remain on those Discord server polls.
