Shortly after the launch of AMD’s latest RDNA 4-based GPUs, the red team revealed that the new ML-based upscaling technology found in the RX 9070 XT and 9070 was developed in collaboration with Sony. This marks the first result of AMD and Sony’s Project Amethyst collaboration, which was announced last year and focuses on using AI to improve the PC and console gaming experience.

And just as we expected to see the results of this collaboration in the form of an improved PlayStation Super Spectral Resolution (PSSR), PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny, in an interview with Digital Foundry, stated that “our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro as the next evolution of PSSR.” Cerny added, “The neural network (and training recipe) in FSR 4’s upscaler are the first results of the Amethyst collaboration.”

PS5 Pro’s ML hardware will run a “tweaked” FSR 4

Despite the raw hardware specifications of the new RX 9070 series GPUs being considerably higher than those of the PS5 Pro, Cerny believes that the PS5 Pro’s ML hardware is up to the task of running FSR 4 without significant re-architecting. In fact, he mentions that the PlayStation 5 Pro’s AI performance is expected to be similar to that of the RX 9070 series. That said, FSR 4 will still require some console-specific tweaks, such as adjustments for specific frame rates, which aren’t always a concern on PCs.

Another challenge in implementing FSR 4 on the PS5 Pro is that the console doesn't support sparsity—a technique used to improve AI efficiency by ignoring redundant data. However, according to Cerny, “We don’t believe sparsity is useful for this particular upscaling algorithm.”

“RDNA 4 and the hardware in PS5 Pro are completely separate designs, which is why I speak in terms of ‘reimplementation’ on PS5 Pro when I talk about the new upscaling network used in FSR 4”

FSR 4-like upscaling on PS5 Pro coming in 2026

However, it will take some time before this FSR 4-like version of PSSR makes its way to PlayStation 5 Pro consoles. For now, the company is focused on working with developers to expand PSSR support across more titles, though they have already begun implementing the new neural network on the PS5 Pro. According to Cerny, the next evolution of PSSR and Sony’s goal of delivering something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler will be available on the PS5 Pro for 2026 titles.
