AMD has released its latest Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 driver, available as an optional update, but it’s pretty much mandatory for anyone looking to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered. CD Projekt Red has upgraded the popular title with a completely free update. Early in its launch, it was deemed “unplayable” on AMD GPUs due to the lack of a launch driver.

The game suffered a spike of negative Steam reviews on launch day, largely due to the rendering problems on AMD cards before the driver arrived. It hasn’t taken long for them to calm down, but there is still some lingering negativity in relation to changes made in the remaster, generally related to other technical problems – “Looks fantastic, runs poorly,” says one user.

Users still have performance issues with The Witcher 3 Remastered

Yesterday, AMD GPU users reported major issues with missing in-game models and black artifacts littering Wild Hunt’s expansive world. While reviewers had access to a pre-release driver to alleviate these issues for Radeon graphics cards, including the flagship RX 9070 XT, a public driver was not immediately available. AMD was pretty quick to make amends, however, making its 26.9.2 driver available a few hours after the update originally went live.

There were more than 1,100 negative reviews on launch day, accounting for 32% of reviews, but they have continued despite the driver fix for AMD users. So far today, September 30, this percentage has actually risen to 35% – and we notice a lot of them come from Nvidia users. Steam Deck users also report freezing issues, deeming it “unplayable on deck” despite pre-release testing suggesting it still runs fine despite the higher performance demands.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is more than a 45GB visual overhaul. It offers quality-of-life improvements and support for newer upscaling/frame generation utilities, including DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction and FSR 4. Gameplay has also been adjusted, with a new skill tree system and camera changes for more dynamic exploration and combat.

Recent reviews for the game still hold a ‘Very Positive’ rating, but it’s still a step down from the ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ standard set before The Witcher 3 upgraded to the Remastered version. PC users can roll back to the previous version if they wish to via their game launcher, but console users do not have the same luxury. On Steam, this involves navigating to the game properties and choosing between Original, Next-gen, or Remastered in the Game Versions and Betas dropdown.
