If you've ever wished your handheld gaming device had a second screen like the Nintendo DS, there's now a way to make it happen. A user on the ROG Ally Reddit community recently showed off their custom-built dual-screen setup, turning their ROG Ally into a DS-like handheld. While their homemade project is not for sale, you can still buy a similar dual-screen upgrade from places such as DNA Mobile Gaming.
Convert your PC handheld into a big Nintendo DS
The Reddit user shared their journey of turning their ROG Ally X into a Nintendo DS-style gaming device. They created two versions. The first one was a simple holder for an extra portable screen, but it was bulky as the cables were external. The second version, on the other hand, was much better, as it had a better frame, hidden cables, and was only 12mm thick. On top of that, they removed unnecessary parts like speakers and the touchscreen digitizer to make it more streamlined.

If you don't have a 3D printer or engineering skills but still want something similar, you’ll be pleased to know that DNA Mobile Gaming is selling a similar dual-screen add-on called the DNA Duo. There are multiple versions now up for pre-order for the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Legion Go, allowing you to attach an extra screen to your handheld gaming device.
The DNA Duo boasts a 7-inch OLED touchscreen that connects to your handheld using a magnetic clamshell hinge, giving it a Nintendo DS-like look. The screen is full HD (1920 x 1080) and has a brightness of 800 nits, making it great for well-lit environments. On top of that, the refresh rate ranges from 60Hz to 120Hz, ensuring the visuals are smooth. Connecting it is also pretty easy, as it can be done via a USB-C cable. In the package, you’ll get the 7-inch display, an adapter, and a 20cm USB-C Lighting cable.
Adding a second screen to your Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or Legion Go can improve your gaming experience in many ways. For gamers who love multitasking, the DNA Duo allows you to run Discord, YouTube, or a game guide on one screen while playing on the other. And as demonstrated in the photo above, it provides excellent support for DS and 3DS emulation.
Currently, the DNA Duo is available for pre-order, with the expected shipping date pushed to late February 2025 (it was previously scheduled to ship in January). The one for the ASUS ROG Ally costs $229.99 CAD, while the add-on for the Steam Deck and Legion Go costs $264.99 CAD. However, thanks to an ongoing discount, you can get them for $229.99 CAD – bringing all versions down to the same price.
