Valve has plans for a travel case that charges your Steam Deck, leak reveals
Table of Contents
Valve’s popular Steam Deck remains one of the best PC gaming handhelds on the market, over three years after its release. There are plenty of accessories you can get for it, including custom travel cases. Valve supplies an official, basic travel case with all of its Steam Deck models, but a patent posted online now reveals that the company has explored the idea of a wireless charging case.
The portable charging case patent also includes a diagram for Valve’s VR headset, the Index. We should point out that the Index is not a battery-powered device – it requires a wired connection to your gaming PC – so it seems likely that this patent relates more-so to the upcoming Steam Frame. The reference to the Index likely existed to avoid the potential of leaking the Frame early.
Steam Deck case with charging port and wireless charging
This news comes from reliable hardware leaker, Brad Lynch, who accurately revealed what the new Steam Controller will look like ahead of its announcement. He recently posted on X to reveal that Valve submitted a patent for this charging case last year, noting that it “can wireless charge your Steam devices”. It remains to be seen if Valve plans to go ahead with such a product.

According to the diagram above, the Steam Deck’s battery will “automatically charge” while placed in the case. Based on the diagram, the case itself will feature a USB-C charging port and what looks like a portable/integrated power bank, presumably to provide wireless charging to the handheld. Steam Deck doesn’t support wireless charging natively, so it remains to be seen how this really functions. Maybe it’s more geared towards the Steam Deck 2 (or whatever it may be called) in the future.
It’s worth mentioning that the new Steam Controller does offer easier charging via its magnetic “Puck”, which is wireless in the sense than you don’t physically need to plug a cable into the controller. Perhaps this charging case patent works with similar technology, though that’s speculation on our part. In any case, we’ve seen people asking for a charging port (or at least a cut-out) on the official Steam Deck case for a while, so it would be nice to see Valve release an official accessory for this.
