Windows update causes chaos again with blue screens and encryption issues reported

Though Windows Update patches often bring in a host of security updates and new features, they can also bring problems along for the ride. The rollout of Windows 10 update KB5058379 has triggered serious problems for some users.
Even though Windows 10 will be reaching the end of support later this year, many users still use it. This is particularly true for large companies or organizations, where upgrading hundreds or even thousands of workstations is not a quick or easy process.
Windows 10 update KB5058379 has some flaws
Some systems engineers reported that Windows 10 update KB5058379 had caused problems in workplaces where BitLocker encryption was used. Some devices were asking for the BitLocker recovery key. Others were refusing to boot up at all. Though these issues didn't affect all devices equipped with BitLocker, it still forced support staff to find workarounds, such as disabling the Trusted Execution option in the BIOS.
Other engineers and IT support staff took to Reddit to report blue screen crashes after applying the update. One frustrated engineer said they had opened a ticket on the blue screen issues with Microsoft, but had yet to receive a reply. Instead, they discovered that disabling “OD Kernel DMA support” in BIOS settings allowed the affected PC to boot, but still left errors in the system log.
Unfortunately, delaying the update or rolling it back is not a practical solution, as update KB5058379 fixes several zero-day exploits. Though the workarounds may fix the problem in the short term, those seeing persistent problems will need to contact Microsoft for a comprehensive fix.
Some users are putting off upgrading to Windows 11 due to their hardware not meeting the stringent requirements for Windows 11 installation. Support for Windows 10 ends in October 2025, so those users will need to decide if they want to upgrade to Windows 11 or switch to an alternative like Linux (or perhaps the upcoming SteamOS, also based on Linux).
