If you haven’t worked it out already, the founder of XAI is Elon Musk. He established the company as a challenger to OpenAI, and – in his words – to ‘understand the true nature of the universe’. Musk also owns Tesla, SpaceX and some of the highest-profile tech companies including his recent acquisition of Twitter. Furthermore, Musk was involved in the creation of OpenAI, so he has some experience in the worlds of chatbots and AI startup companies. Plus, he also founded TruthGPT, an alternate, less ‘woke’ version of the popular ChatGPT.
In March 2023, Musk and Jared Birchall, who manages the tycoon’s family office, filed for a businesses called X.AI, according to Nevada state filing. In April, the Financial Times reported Musk was in discussion with investors about an AI startup. Now, as of July 2023, the company’s website is live.
XAI will apparently be staffed by a range of group of researchers with roots in some of the leading tech companies at the forefront of artificial intelligence, including Microsoft and Google’s DeepMind who have worked on projects like the GPT-4 chatbot. This means that some of the wisdom that has gone into AI development in Microsoft research and Google research will be present in this new corp.
