Jumping to Socket AM5 depends on pricing, and we’re convinced that the current Amazon deal for the Ryzen 5 9600X is part of the puzzle. The 9000-Series processor remains well under $200 at the retailer, and at the time of writing, costs $179. That’s $40 below its $220 list price, and far cheaper than we can find it anywhere. If you’re weighing it up against a final Socket AM4 upgrade, we think this is the type of pricing you need.

Why we’d pick the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X

A good budget gamer

As our best CPUs for gaming guide points out, the Ryzen 5 9600X is actually pretty punchy for its price. We rate it as the best budget AMD CPU for gaming for good reason. It beats its predecessor, the Ryzen 5 7600X, and in our tests it achieved up to 325 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 and up to 246 FPS in Days Gone (paired with an RTX 4070Ti Super).

Close to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D

Socket AM4’s 5800X3D is legendary, but our tests show that the new generation of Zen cores matter if you’re considering a switch to AM5. In our 9600X review, the newer CPU traded blows with the last-platform gem. And hey, even if it’s close, it shows what the 9600X can do. The 5800X3D costs around $350, and the 9600X is $179, although the latter requires a full new build.

A solid AM5 performer

As a first CPU for a Socket AM5 PC, the 9600X is a solid option. Not only does it give you plenty of options for future drop-in upgrades, but its 6-core, 12-thread configuration makes it a handy day-to-day pick for mixed use, from gaming to office work, and even lighter productivity.

What to consider before you buy

If you can’t, there’s no reason to stretch yourself for a bigger outlay in a switch to Socket AM5. AM5 is still solid for most needs. However, if your old PC no longer does what’s needed, and you’re waiting for the right time – at least to buy an AM5 CPU – this price for the 9600X is good. We’d skip the Ryzen 5 7600X, which is only $7 cheaper, and start on the 9000-Series path.
