Elgato is a tricky name to ignore in gaming and content accessories. But there’s no reason to if the value matches the company’s well-established quality. One such example of its prowess is the Elgato Wave DX – a dynamic XLR microphone that is arguably worth well beyond its regular price. And a new deal price has it down from $100 to $80, for a cool $20 saving. Amazon labels the deal as the lowest in price in 30 days, but we haven’t seen it drop this far since July. Either way, here’s why it’s a solid pick.

Why we like the Elgato Wave DX dynamic XLR mic

Cardioid polar pattern and room noise reduction

The Elgato Wave DX uses the classic Cardioid polar pattern for front-facing audio capture. However, the capture angle is wider to allow better ‘off-axis’ capture. So if you need to shift away from your mic while gaming, on a call, or streaming, the mic can still pick you up even if you’re not directly in front. Combined with ‘room noise reduction’, users love the clarity of voice pickup.

An interface-agnostic mic

You won’t need a specific audio setup to use the Elgato Wave DX. You don’t need a certain audio interface or an XLR pre-amp to use the mic. Nor do you need a signal booster. You need to plug it into something, but that can be via any mixer or interface with an XLR connector; not even necessarily an Elgato XLR device.

Adjustable mount with unobstructive view

Like the best mics available for gamers and content creators, this one has a 5/8″ mount with 3/8″ and 1/4″ thread adaptors, so you can adapt it as you need, to an existing mic arm, or a specific one you’re keen on. Once set up, the Wave DX is a sleek, unobstructive mic to use. Users report it as easy to look past thanks to its chic design, which means you can focus on the action in front of you.

What to consider before you buy

While there are plenty of mics to choose from, Elgato is an established name and a reassuringly good producer of XLR accessories. At $80, the Elgato Wave DX is genuinely good value, and a solid pick if you want to invest extra in game comms or take the first steps with streaming and content creation. However, XLR mics aren’t for everybody: they offer great quality, but you could also consider a USB condenser mic that plugs right into a PC. That’s a personal choice worth investigating.
