  • Requires an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 RAM

How this processor performed

This processor has 12 cores and 24 threads, which can ramp up to 5.6 GHz, but you can take that even higher, given you have the proper equipment, such as the best CPU cooler, to keep it from thermal throttling. That being said, even at base settings, it shouldn’t give you any trouble, and you can leverage PBO to increase its output without getting too technical.

When we reviewed the Ryzen 9 9900X, we paired it with the RTX 4070 Ti Super, but you can easily use it with the RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and even higher without running into any issues. This setup churned out the following numbers:

  • 31,502 points in the Cinebench R23 multi-core test
  • 200.72 SPM in Monster, 146.82 SPM in Junkshop, and 101.15 SPM in Classroom
  • Completed the Handbrake TOS 4K Fast 1080P encode test in 02:19

When it came to gaming, this is what we got:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 ran at 330 FPS with the settings turned down to 1080p low
  • It managed 245 FPS in Days Gone

These are very graphically demanding titles, and they could easily keep up with the GPU at low resolution. When you push 4K, the load will shift on the GPU, and the processor will have an easier time, meaning even fewer chances of a CPU bottleneck. Overall, we think this deal is definitely worth taking a look at, but do keep in mind that it only works with DDR5 RAM, which is very expensive.
