I’m not saying PCIe Gen 5 SSDs are affordable, but if you need to buy one right now, then balancing cost and performance is key. And the rapid Lexar 2TB NM1090 PRO is still at its lowest price since February. Granted, that’s not as low as before this year’s SSD price hikes. But it does offer phenomenal, workstation-level speed and is now $360, down from a recent high of $419. The current cost is below the drive’s average Amazon price, too.

Why we like the Lexar 2TB NM1090 PRO SSD PCIe Gen5 SSD

Professional performance

As the name suggests, the NM1090 PRO is a professional-level NVMe SSD, and the speeds prove it. At up to 14,000MB/s read and 13,000MB/s write, this SSD is fighting for attention with the likes of the Samsung SSD 9100 PRO. And that is impressive company to be in. Certainly, it’s enough performance for workstations and professional needs.

Improved value

Not only does the NM1090 PRO almost match the theoretical speeds offered by Samsung’s 9100 PRO, but it’s $40 cheaper. When you’re spending hundreds on an SSD, that’s not a bad saving to consider – especially if the slight boost in performance from the Samsung solution is neither here nor there.

Big on endurance

The 2TB NM1090 PRO has an endurance rating of 1400 TBW. That’s a high, workstation-level endurance rating. So, if you’re planning to use it for a home professional setup, the chances are that you shouldn’t see any errors in use before you’re ready to replace the drive itself.

What to consider before you buy

Two key points need considering. The first is that this isn’t really a consumer-grade SSD. Even if you’re looking for the best SSDs for gaming, the 2TB NM1090 PRO will likely be far beyond your needs. If you are looking for a professional-grade or workstation drive and this ticks the boxes, then balancing the extra cost of the Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB with its higher performance is a personal decision. However, as we know, SSDs aren’t in a great place right now, so cost may be the key factor on the side of the Lexar.
